Is poor air quality involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease? German and Dutch scientists joint for a project that is trying to find an answer, informs the non-profit Alzheimer Research Initiative (AFI). The research project will be funded by the AFI and the organization Alzheimer Nederland until the end of 2019.
Observational studies show that people living near busy roads are at an increased risk for cognitive impairment. As early as 2004, a team of researchers reported marked inflammatory and Alzheimer's disease-like changes in the brain of people exposed to very high concentrations of air pollutants in Mexico City ("Toxicologic Pathology").
